Microsoft's OpenAI Bet Pays Off with $30B Windfall in Two Years
Microsoft's $13 billion investment in OpenAI has generated an estimated $30 billion in revenue for the tech giant between 2023 and 2025, more than doubling its initial outlay. The finding is based on an analysis of company filings and internal documents by The Information.
The bulk of Microsoft's gains stem from OpenAI's massive infrastructure needs, with the AI model paying around $23 billion for Azure server rentals between 2023 and 2025. Beyond hardware costs, Microsoft's sales of AI-integrated products, such as Office 365 Copilot and GitHub Copilot, contributed a significant portion to the total revenue.
However, investors have expressed concerns over the high costs of building data centers and purchasing semiconductor and memory chips required to run large-scale AI models. Despite this, Microsoft has successfully recouped its initial investment, with its shares having dropped about 9% over the past year.
