Microsoft's Triple Threat: AI Expansion vs Climate Goals

Microsoft's impressive financial performance is not without its challenges. The company closed its fiscal year with net income of $133.7 billion, a 31 percent increase, while revenue climbed 18 percent to $331.8 billion.

The numbers, however, tell a more complicated story as Microsoft navigates three key areas: AI infrastructure expansion, environmental commitments, and geopolitical headwinds.

The company's aggressive buildout of AI infrastructure is driving growth but also straining its climate commitments. Between mid-July 2023 and mid-July 2024, Microsoft purchased approximately 8.55 million tons of CO2 certificates, roughly 80 percent fewer than in the comparable period, while total emissions rose 25 percent.

MICROSOFT is preparing to ramp up production of its internally developed AI chip next year, aiming to persuade major cloud customers to adopt custom silicon. Analysts see this as a strategic shift with significant implications for margins and growth.
