Microsoft's X Account Falls Prey to Crypto Scam Hacking
Microsoft's X account was compromised yesterday in an unauthorized posting spree. Clippy-themed cryptocurrency tweets were posted, and a message appeared asking for likes to bring back the infamous digital assistant.
The @Microsoft account has over 13 million followers and reposted a tweet from a Clippy crypto account. The profile image was also changed to feature Clippy, a nod to the animated paperclip that once helped users navigate Microsoft Office.
However, it wasn't long before the unauthorized posts were removed, and a lengthy apology message appeared on the account. 'To be clear, Microsoft does not support, endorse, sponsor, or authorize any cryptocurrency or crypto-related token,' the statement read.
The incident is reminiscent of past hacks where individuals have used X accounts to promote scams or malware. In this case, the company has confirmed that it's taking the matter seriously and will pursue 'appropriate legal action' to remove the unauthorized content.
