Midlands Students Learn Online Safety from Google's Internet Safety Roadshow

Google's Internet Safety Roadshow made its first stop in the Midlands at Blythewood Middle School, where students learned about digital citizenship and online safety. Tech representatives and district leaders led an interactive session on phishing scams, cyberbullying, and protecting personal data.

The assembly also covered how strangers can disguise themselves in online games and group chats. Dr. Kim Moore, Richland Two superintendent, emphasized the importance of teaching students to make better choices and stay safe online.

Moore reminded students that 'you are in charge of the technology. Do not let the technology control you.' Seventh grader Spencer Lorick noted one key takeaway: 'always know who you're playing with or talking to' when online, as strangers may use fake profiles or identities.

The district plans to reinforce these lessons throughout the school year and encourages parents to continue conversations about digital citizenship at home. The Internet Safety Roadshow will visit another Midlands school next, Liberty STEAM Charter School in Sumter, on Monday.
