Moderna and Merck have achieved a breakthrough in developing personalized cancer vaccines that target specific tumor mutations, offering new hope for cancer treatment.

The vaccine, known as intismeran autogene, combines up to nine doses of Merck's immunotherapy drug Keytruda with a customized mRNA vaccine. This approach trains the immune system to specifically attack the patient's cancer cells without harming healthy ones.

In a large trial involving over 1,000 melanoma patients at high risk of recurrence after surgical removal of localized tumors, the vaccine helped prevent the return and spread of disease. The companies expect thousands of melanoma patients could benefit within the first few years of approval.

Dr. Ryan Sullivan, director of the Center for Melanoma at Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute, called this breakthrough a 'big deal' for the field in general, saying it gives hope that these approaches may change the way we treat cancer more broadly.
