A potential breakthrough in cancer treatment has been announced by Moderna and Merck. The two companies have released promising results for a personalized mRNA vaccine that can reduce the risk of melanoma recurrence in high-risk patients.

The study, which involved over 1,100 patients who had already undergone melanoma surgery, found that the combined treatment of Moderna's vaccine and Merck's cancer immunotherapy drug Keytruda kept cancer away for longer than Keytruda alone. The vaccine also stopped the cancer from spreading in the body.

Melanoma is one of the most aggressive and deadliest forms of skin cancer, with an estimated 14,500 deaths expected in the US this year. Women under 49 have a higher risk of developing melanoma than men, thanks to tanning.

The study's principal investigator, Professor Georgina Long, stated that 'this has the potential to establish a new treatment paradigm' in melanoma. The mRNA vaccine is based on the unique mutational 'fingerprint' of a patient's own tumor.
