Moderna and Merck have announced that their mRNA cancer vaccine has succeeded in a Phase 3 trial for melanoma. The treatment, known as intismeran, uses the same platform as Moderna's COVID-19 vaccine to deliver mRNA code to healthy cells. This code instructs those cells to produce protein fragments representing cancer mutations, which are then presented to immune cells as antigens.

The companies' announcement highlights the potential of this new treatment paradigm, with Georgina Long describing it as 'a landmark moment' and Dean Li calling it a 'reinforcement of the promise of a more personalized approach to cancer treatment.' Moderna CEO Stéphane Bancel emphasized mRNA technology's role in making this vision a reality.

While outside experts are hopeful, Lennard Lee from the University of Oxford noted that we don't yet know the magnitude of the benefit or detailed subgroup analyses. He called it 'very encouraging' and 'significant,' but also cautioned that more information is needed to understand precisely how large the benefit is.
