Moderna and Merck's Cancer Vaccine Success Boosts Confidence in CancerVax Platform
CancerVax, Inc., a biotech company developing an innovative universal cancer treatment platform, welcomed recent positive Phase 3 clinical trial results from Moderna and Merck's INTerpath-001 study of a personalized cancer vaccine for melanoma.
The mRNA-based approach used in the Moderna/Merck vaccine shares similarities with CancerVax's own non-personalized, off-the-shelf cancer vaccines currently in pre-clinical development. Both platforms utilize lipid nanoparticles and messenger ribonucleic acids (mRNAs) to deliver treatments.
The INTerpath-001 study demonstrated that an mRNA-based approach can effectively mobilize the immune system against cancer cells. This milestone is seen as crucial for the advancement of cancer immunotherapy, according to Dr. George Katibah, CancerVax's Chief Scientific Officer.
CancerVax is pursuing a fundamentally different architecture for its universal cancer vaccine, which does not rely on creating individualized treatments for every patient. Instead, it aims to activate existing antiviral immunity in the body against cancer cells by disguising them as familiar viral infections.
