Moderna and Merck's mRNA Cancer Vaccine Scores Big Win Against Skin Cancer
Pharmaceutical giants Merck and Moderna have made a groundbreaking announcement regarding their collaborative mRNA cancer vaccine, Intismeran. In combination with Keytruda, an immunotherapy drug developed by Merck, this personalized vaccine has achieved remarkable results in treating skin cancer.
The study involved 1,137 high-risk stage IIB-IV melanoma patients who had undergone surgical removal of their tumors. The trial showed a significant reduction in skin cancer recurrence and spread when compared to the use of Keytruda alone.
Notably, Intismeran uses Merck's Keytruda alongside a bespoke mRNA vaccine developed by Moderna, tailored to each patient based on the mutations found in their tumors.
The success of this treatment has led to a substantial market response, with Moderna shares surging 40% and Merck seeing a 2% uptick in premarket trading. While no new safety signals emerged during the trial, further studies and regulatory review are still necessary before this approach can be widely adopted.
