Moderna, Merck Cancer Vaccine Breakthrough Shows Promise in Large Trial
Moderna and Merck have made significant strides in cancer treatment with their personalized vaccine, intismeran autogene. This breakthrough technology trains the immune system to target specific mutations found on a person's tumour cells. In a large trial involving over 1,000 melanoma patients who had localized tumors surgically removed, the vaccine prevented recurrence and spread of disease.
The trial results are promising, with a significant reduction in cancer return and metastasis compared to Keytruda treatment alone. Dr. Ryan Sullivan, director of the Center for Melanoma at Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute, called it 'a big deal' for the field. mRNA technology has been validated as a cancer treatment, according to Dr. Julie Gralow, chief medical officer of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
The vaccine is currently in late-stage development for various tumour types, including non-small cell lung cancers, bladder, and kidney cancers. Merck and Moderna are also studying its combination with Keytruda in mid-stage trials for pancreatic and stomach cancers. Results from these studies are expected within the next year or two.
Dr. Elizabeth Buchbinder, a melanoma specialist at Mass General Brigham Cancer Institute, believes this technology may have broad applicability due to many cancer types producing multiple mutations. The added benefit of the vaccine 'may change the math' for patients with only a 20% risk of cancer recurrence, according to Dr. Buchbinder.
