Moderna-Merck Cancer Vaccine Shows Promising Results in Phase 3 Trial
Moderna and Merck's joint effort has yielded promising results in a Phase 3 melanoma trial. The personalized mRNA cancer vaccine trains the immune system to fight cancer by giving it instructions to recognize and destroy cancer cells.
The treatment works by surgically removing a patient's tumor, studying its genetic mutations, and using that information to create a custom vaccine. Each patient receives a unique vaccine tailored to their specific genetic profile, allowing their immune system to hunt down and eliminate any remaining cancer cells.
In the latest trial, over 1100 patients received the personalized vaccine alongside Keytruda, an existing approved cancer drug. The results showed that patients who received the combination treatment had nearly half the risk of their cancer returning or dying compared to those who received Keytruda alone.
