Moderna-Merck Vaccine Offers New Hope Against Deadliest Skin Cancer
A new mRNA cancer vaccine developed by Moderna and Merck is showing promising results in trials against melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer. The vaccine works by teaching the immune system to recognize the unique genetic fingerprint of the cancer.
The American Cancer Society reports that skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in the US, with melanoma accounting for a small percentage but causing the majority of skin cancer deaths. Dr. Adnan Alkhalili, medical oncologist and director of Mercy Health Cancer Centers, says this vaccine represents a significant step forward.
The vaccine is personalized to each patient using their own tumor cells, similar to COVID vaccines. When paired with existing immunotherapy, the shot helped reduce the risk of cancer returning or spreading further in patients. According to Alkhalili, 80 percent of those receiving this treatment can expect their cancer to be controlled and regressed.
While there are other approved cancer vaccines, this new development is significant due to its personalized approach and potential for improved survival rates. Alkhalili himself was diagnosed with leukemia last year and underwent immunotherapy as part of his treatment, which led to remission. The companies still need to publish full clinical trial results before applying for FDA approval.
