Moderna-Merck Vaccine Shows Promising Results in Fighting Melanoma
A new experimental vaccine developed by Moderna and Merck has shown promising results in fighting cancer. In a joint statement, the companies announced that their vaccine combined with the drug Keytruda kept melanoma from spreading or coming back longer than Keytruda alone in a trial involving 1,137 patients.
According to Mansoor Amiji, professor of pharmaceutical and biomedical sciences at Northeastern University's Bouvé College of Health Sciences, this personalized cancer vaccine trains the immune system to recognize and attack tumor cells. The vaccine gives the immune system a custom-made target, teaching it to recognize proteins called antigens found on the surface of foreign cells.
The Moderna-Merck vaccine includes mRNA for up to 34 possible neoantigens unique to each patient's tumor, prompting cells to produce copies of those targets and activating T-cells. Keytruda helps by blocking one of the off switches that allows tumors to hide from the attack, making it easier for T-cells to directly target cancer cells.
While the results are promising, experts caution that more data is needed to understand the full implications of this treatment. Amiji noted that personalization comes with a practical challenge: how to develop vaccines quickly enough for thousands of patients.
