Moderna-Merck Vaccine Sparks Hope for Cancer Breakthrough
Moderna's collaborative effort with Merck has brought mRNA technology to the forefront of cancer treatment, sparking hope for new avenues in this field. The companies have been working on an experimental vaccine called intismeran autogene, designed to target mutations unique to a patient's individual tumor.
The personalized vaccine is created by sequencing the tumor and identifying up to 34 specific mutations that can be targeted by the vaccine. When combined with Merck's immunotherapy Keytruda, the treatment trains the immune system to recognize and attack cancer cells. Interim data from a large trial showed promising results in reducing melanoma recurrence and spread.
Experts believe this treatment may work best for highly mutated cancers such as melanoma, where abundant tumor-specific mutations provide more targets for the vaccine to attack. Dr. Michael Atkins, deputy director of the Georgetown Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, stated that high-mutation-rate cancers like lung and colon cancer could also be promising targets.
However, it is unclear whether this technology will work against other types of cancer. Merck and Moderna are conducting several large trials to test the efficacy of intismeran autogene in non-small cell lung cancer patients whose tumors have been surgically removed.
