Moderna Stock Soars on Melanoma Treatment Breakthrough
Moderna's stock surged in August after the company announced positive results from a late-stage clinical study of its melanoma treatment, in partnership with Merck. The combination of Moderna's personalized mRNA cancer vaccine and Keytruda significantly extended the recurrence-free survival of advanced melanoma patients who had already undergone surgery.
This is not the first time Moderna has seen its stock skyrocket after making a game-changing advancement. In 2020, the company brought its coronavirus vaccine from the drawing board to commercialization in less than a year, driving the stock up by 2,000%. The recent surge saw the stock soar 177% in one trading session and end the month of August with an increase of about 150%.
Despite this optimism, some investors are cautious. A decline in demand for the coronavirus vaccine in later days of the pandemic weighed on Moderna's earnings and stock performance. The company took action to cut costs and redirect its focus to other respiratory vaccines, a rare disease pipeline, and its cancer vaccine program.
