Moderna Stock Surges Ahead of Key Melanoma Data Release
Moderna's stock surged by 8% to $204.60 in afternoon trading, extending its sharp rise this year. The biotech company has seen its shares climb nearly 600% year-to-date, driven by anticipation of a breakthrough in its melanoma cancer vaccine trial. The complete Phase 3 dataset for the vaccine, known as intismeran, is expected to be presented at the European Society for Medical Oncology (ESMO) congress in Madrid later this month.
The melanoma program is a joint effort between Moderna and Merck, using intismeran in combination with Merck's Keytruda. Early results showed that the combination extended the time before cancer returned or spread in patients whose tumors had been surgically removed. Analysts like Geoff Meacham of Citigroup and Alec Stranahan of Bank of America have highlighted the importance of the full dataset for validating these results.
While Moderna's stock has soared, its peers have seen more modest movements. BioNTech, another mRNA developer, saw its stock rise by 0.7% to $97.59. Pfizer, however, slipped by 2% to $27.37. The divergence in performance reflects the market's focus on Moderna's melanoma program, which is further along than BioNTech's similar efforts.
The upcoming ESMO presentation in Madrid is a critical moment for Moderna. A strong dataset could confirm the recurrence benefit observed in August, potentially easing capital pressures and diversifying Moderna's revenue beyond infectious disease vaccines. However, any shortcomings in the data could lead to a steep decline in Moderna's stock, which has already priced in significant success.
