Moderna Stock Surges on Positive Cancer Therapy Results
Moderna's stock has surged over 158% in the past month, reaching $160 from $62 in mid-August. This significant jump is attributed to the company's announcement of a positive Phase 3 result for its personalized mRNA cancer therapy, intismeran autogene, in collaboration with Merck & Company.
The trial met its primary recurrence-free-survival endpoint and a key secondary endpoint measuring distant metastasis-free survival. This breakthrough marks Moderna's first Phase 3 validation for an mRNA-based cancer therapy. The company enrolled 1,137 patients with completely resected Stage IIB-IV melanoma, comparing the personalized vaccine plus Merck's Keytruda with Keytruda alone.
CEO Stéphane Bancel called the result an 'extraordinary milestone' for Moderna and mRNA science. However, investors are now paying for the possibility that this milestone becomes much bigger. The next catalyst is not another headline trial result but rather the evidence behind the topline announcement.
