Modular Housing Boosts Efficiency in Los Angeles Affordable Housing Projects
Abode Communities, a nonprofit housing provider in Los Angeles, has developed two modular supportive housing communities: Western Landing and Beacon Landing. The units are for people who have experienced homelessness.
The development process was streamlined by using modular construction methods, which involves building sections of the home in a factory rather than on-site. This approach reduced labor costs, material costs, and construction time.
JPMorganChase has provided over $1.5 million in philanthropic support since 2021, helping Abode Communities advance its pre-development activities, improve onsite operations, and explore modular construction strategies. The bank also provided debt financing for the developments.
Western Landing, one of the two communities, took 17 months to complete at a cost that was lower than traditional homebuilding methods. The development offers 170 studio rental apartments near public transportation and includes amenities such as a landscaped courtyard, dog run, community gathering space, and onsite supportive services.
