Monarch Butterflies Endangered as Epic Migration Faces Threats

Every autumn, millions of monarch butterflies embark on an incredible journey across North America, traveling up to 3,000 miles from their summer breeding grounds to overwintering forests in Mexico. Despite their tiny size, these butterflies are renowned for this epic migration, which is now under threat. In 2022, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) declared the migratory monarch butterfly Endangered, citing habitat loss, pesticides, climate change, and ruined wintering forests as major contributors to their decline.

The monarch’s survival hinges on milkweed, a poisonous plant that is their sole food source. Female monarchs lay eggs exclusively on milkweed, and the caterpillars that hatch feed on its toxic leaves, storing the plant’s chemical toxins as a defense mechanism. This unique adaptation allows them to deter predators, as the bright orange-and-black coloring of the butterflies serves as a warning of their toxicity.

The monarch migration is a multi-generational journey. Eastern monarchs travel south from Canada and the US, while the western population has seen a staggering 99.9% decline from the 1980s to 2021, with numbers dropping from millions to just 2,000 during winter counts. The so-called “super generation” of monarchs, which lives up to eight months, completes the entire journey south, guided by environmental cues like day length and temperature.

Despite the IUCN’s Endangered designation, the US has yet to finalize federal protections for monarchs. As of September 2026, they are still under consideration for listing as “threatened” under the Endangered Species Act. However, individuals can help by preserving wild habitats, planting native milkweed, and reducing pesticide use to support these remarkable travelers.
