Montgomery County's Biotech Corridor Drives Breakthroughs in Medicine
Montgomery County, Pennsylvania is home to one of the most concentrated pharmaceutical and biotech corridors in the country.
The cluster has built on decades of legacy research campuses, employing thousands of local scientists, technicians, and researchers. Merck's West Point campus alone employs about 14,000 people, while GSK's Upper Providence hub houses 3,400 researchers - roughly 40% of the company's global R&D workforce.
The Johnson & Johnson Spring House campus is its largest research site anywhere, employing about 2,500 scientists. The company recently announced a $1 billion investment in a Lower Gwynedd cell therapy plant, which is expected to bring 500 more jobs.
This workforce has developed some of medicine's most ambitious new treatments, including vaccines and gene therapies that retrain the immune system.
