Moon Mapping Breakthrough: NASA-IBM Collaborate on Advanced AI Model
NASA and IBM have collaborated to develop an advanced foundation model for mapping the Moon's surface. The model, called the NASA-IBM Lunar Foundation Model, integrates decades of data collected from US and Japanese missions flown over the Moon.
This comprehensive model is the first AI-based representation of the Moon, combining observations captured in various modalities, at different viewing angles and spatial scales. By consolidating these disparate measurements into one representation, researchers have created a versatile tool that can be quickly adapted to different tasks and reused.
NASA has prioritized three main applications for this model: mapping smaller, uncatalogued craters on the Moon's surface; investigating its volcanic history; and scouring craters at both poles for ice. The latter is crucial for future astronaut crews seeking a source of drinking water, oxygen, and fuel.
