Morningstar Relocates HQ to Thompson Center with $5 Million 'Commitment to Chicago'
Morningstar, the financial services company founded in Chicago by Joe Mansueto in 1984, is relocating its global headquarters to the Thompson Center. The move will bring over 11,000 employees from its current location at 22 W. Washington St. across from the Daley Center to more than 275,000 square feet in the former state government building. Morningstar's new home is expected to be ready by late 2028.
The company's CEO, Kunal Kapoor, said that this move reflects their confidence in Chicago and its people. As part of this commitment, Morningstar will contribute $5 million over five years as part of the 'Commitment to Chicago' initiative. This includes a $1 million donation to the Commercial Club Foundation for economic growth planning and $4 million in grants to nonprofits focused on financial services and related careers.
Morningstar's decision comes after Google announced plans to buy the Thompson Center in 2022, with renderings of the building's interior recently unveiled. Mayor Brandon Johnson praised Morningstar's move, stating that it reaffirms their commitment to Chicago and its central business district.
