MRNA Breakthrough Sparks Hope for Personalized Medicine Revolution
Moderna and Merck's mRNA cancer vaccine has sparked renewed hope for personalized medicine after successfully lengthening patient survival in a phase 3 study. The therapy, known as intismeran or V940/mRNA-4157, showed statistically significant improvements in recurrence-free survival and survival without distant metastasis when combined with the standard-of-care immunotherapy Keytruda.
The results have boosted prospects for other biopharmas exploring mRNA technology for personalized cancer treatments. Experts believe this could be a game-changer, as every type of cancer is different, and even patients with the same cancer can have tumors that behave differently under the same treatments.
'I think it's the start of a personalized medicine revolution,' said Jeff Coller, Ph.D., a professor of RNA biology and therapeutics at Johns Hopkins University. 'This is going to catalyze so much incredible research and development and innovation.'
The success of intismeran has also had a knock-on effect on other biotechs in the mRNA arena, with shares rising by up to 20% for companies such as Arcturus Therapeutics.
