Munger's Blunt Question Sparks Insight into Ballmer's Enduring Microsoft Loyalty
Charlie Munger's blunt question to former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer still lingers in memory. At a golf club event in Los Angeles, Munger asked Ballmer why he continued to hold onto his significant stake in Microsoft, despite many of his colleagues and associates selling theirs. Ballmer responded with characteristic brevity: 'No, but I'm not loyal.'
The exchange offers insight into Ballmer's enduring loyalty to the company. Even after stepping down as CEO in 2014, Ballmer retained a substantial portion of his Microsoft shares, which comprised about 4% of the company at the time. His last disclosed holding was 333 million shares, and he has since sold an estimated 14 million.
Ballmer's loyalty to Microsoft is rooted in his faith in the company's people and mission. In a 2024 Wall Street Journal report, Ballmer stated that 'the only stock I really study still is Microsoft, because that's still overwhelmingly, overwhelmingly, overwhelmingly the No. 1 thing that I own.'
Ballmer's fortune remains largely tied to his Microsoft holdings, with the company being his biggest reported asset. He has also received over $12 billion from Microsoft dividends and share sales. The Ballmer family has given away more than $7.4 billion in philanthropic efforts since leaving Microsoft.
