Musk Shifts AI Narrative with Concession on Anthropic Leadership
Elon Musk has reversed his stance on AI company Anthropic, calling it 'the obvious leader in AI' and praising its Mythos and Fable models. Just a few months ago, Musk publicly dismissed Anthropic as a serious player in the AI race, saying that 'winning was never in the set of possible outcomes for Anthropic.'
However, on July 9, he took to X (formerly Twitter) and admitted he was 'clearly wrong' about Anthropic. He committed to not disadvantaging the company regarding infrastructure access, which is significant because Musk controls significant AI compute resources through his own company xAI.
This concession has implications for Amazon investors, as Anthropic has received over $13 billion in commitments from the tech giant, including a $5 billion investment announced in April 2026. Anthropic has also committed to spending more than $100 billion on Amazon Web Services (AWS) over the next decade, providing a revenue floor for AWS.
Musk's endorsement of Anthropic is significant because it shifts the narrative around AI development. OpenAI had long been considered the frontrunner due to its first-mover advantage with ChatGPT and its relationship with Microsoft. However, Musk's statement suggests that Anthropic may now be seen as a leading player.
The implications for xAI are also worth considering. By acknowledging Anthropic's lead, Musk may be resetting expectations for his own company's Grok models while positioning xAI as a platform provider rather than a pure model competitor.
