Musk Teases Massive Chip Expansion at SpaceX's Colossus 2
Elon Musk has outlined plans to expand the chip capacity at Colossus 2, SpaceX's AI supercomputer. The company currently has 110,000 Nvidia GB200 chips and 440,000 GB300 chips installed. Musk expects an additional 220,000 GB300 chips to be online next week, with a second batch of 220,000 in November and potentially a third wave by late December.
The total number of GB300 chips would reach 660,000 if all three waves are completed on schedule. This expansion is commercially significant as SpaceX has signed agreements with outside customers, including Google and Anthropic, to provide computing capacity.
Google has also announced plans to test its Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) in orbit aboard a SpaceX rocket. The mission will determine whether the TPUs can survive launch and perform under orbital conditions.
