Musk Unveils Ambitious Plans to Ramp Up Colossus 2 Computing Power
SpaceX's Colossus 2 data center plans to significantly boost its computing power by year-end, according to Elon Musk. The Memphis-based facility currently utilizes 110,000 Nvidia GB200 chips and 440,000 Nvidia GB300 chips. However, an additional 220,000 GB300 chips are set to come online next week, followed by another 220,000 in November.
Musk hinted at the possibility of yet another 220,000 GB300 chips being added by late December, depending on circumstances. The Colossus center is touted as the world's largest AI supercomputer and has expanded its capabilities beyond training xAI's flagship AI Grok to provide computing power to other projects.
xAI has begun renting out computing capacity from the complex to companies like Anthropic and Alphabet's Google this year. Musk did not specify whether Colossus 2 had sufficient available capacity and power to accommodate the additional chips.
