Nadella Defends Xbox Layoffs Amid Criticism Over Microsoft's AI Strategy
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella is facing criticism for his response to the Xbox division's recent layoffs and studio closures. In an appearance on the Sources Podcast, Nadella praised Xbox CEO Asha Sharma's actions as a necessary step in streamlining the team.
Nadella stated that he feels 'fantastic' about the IP (intellectual property) portfolio held by Xbox, which includes various studios and game franchises.
He also acknowledged the need for a sustainable business model to deliver gaming to more people. Nadella noted that Western consumers are skeptical of AI technology compared to other parts of the world, citing a Gallup poll that showed low levels of optimism about AI in the West.
Nadella questioned what went wrong in the West and suggested that the industry needs to earn trust by showing the benefits of AI to both consumers and enterprises. Prominent AI skeptic Ed Zitron has criticized Microsoft's management of Xbox, calling it 'catastrophic' and blaming failed AI bets for the division's precarious position.
