Nadella's Copilot Claim Sparks Debate Amid Technical Reality Reveal
Microsoft's Copilot has been touted as a 'new operating system for work' by CEO Satya Nadella, but a recent technical teardown revealed its true nature, a Chromium-based web app with a core launcher of only about 5MB.
Nadella made the statement on October 1 in an official Microsoft blog post announcing LinkedIn CEO Ryan Roslansky's departure. Roslansky will continue to serve as an advisor until December, while his responsibilities will be transferred to the Copilot, Agents, and Platforms organization led by Charles Lamanna.
The technical teardown conducted by Windows Latest found that the Copilot desktop app is essentially a renamed Microsoft Edge launcher with a full Edge 154 build totaling roughly 520MB. At runtime, Copilot loads copilot.microsoft.com (for personal accounts) or m365.cloud.microsoft/chat (for work accounts), with Chromium renderer, GPU, and utility processes running in the background.
Nadella's 'operating system' positioning is closer to a strategic vision, positioning Copilot as a unified entry point spanning all models, device form factors, and work tasks. However, this contradicts the technical reality of Copilot being a web app.
