NASA Unveils New Boeing 777 Airborne Lab for Global Earth Science Missions
NASA has welcomed a new Boeing 777 airborne laboratory to its Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. The aircraft will serve as a base for global Earth science missions and replace the retired DC-8 flying laboratory.
The newly repainted Boeing 777 arrived at NASA's Langley Research Center after receiving exterior work, featuring its new paint scheme. As an airborne research facility, the modified jet will carry instruments to collect environmental data worldwide.
Crews will use the platform for sensor development, satellite sensor calibration, and data product validation. The plane will also conduct field studies on Earth system processes, gathering information that will help improve computer modeling and support decision-making.
The aircraft is currently undergoing modifications, with operations from Langley Research Center scheduled to begin in 2027.
