Nasdaq Hits Record High as Tech Stocks Drive Market Gains
The US stock market showed mixed results on Monday, October 5, with the Nasdaq Composite reaching a record high. The tech-heavy index climbed 0.77%, driven by gains in major technology and growth stocks such as Nvidia, Meta Platforms, Microsoft, and Tesla. The S&P 500 also saw a rise of 0.50%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped slightly by 0.06%.
Investors continued to evaluate several key factors, including Federal Reserve interest rate policies, Treasury yields, oil prices, corporate earnings, and economic growth. Despite elevated bond yields and geopolitical risks, the market was buoyed by strong performances in megacap technology stocks, particularly those linked to artificial intelligence and tech growth.
The S&P 500 saw gains across 10 of its 11 sectors, with real estate being the only lagging sector. Technology stocks remained central to the market's movement, with Nvidia shares rising about 1.2% and other major tech stocks like Meta Platforms, Microsoft, and Tesla gaining between 1.6% and 2.4%. Dennis Dick, founder and market structure analyst at Triple D Trading, noted that the AI and technology story remained strong enough to withstand pressure from higher interest rates.
The Federal Reserve's next moves remained a major focus for investors. Recent weaker-than-expected U.S. employment data reduced expectations for an immediate rate increase, with traders anticipating the Fed to keep interest rates unchanged in October but potentially raising them in December. Treasury yields remained near multi-year highs, posing a risk to the market. Additionally, oil prices near $100 per barrel due to Middle East tensions and concerns over energy infrastructure added to the market's complexities.
