Nasdaq Sinks on AI Computing Bottleneck Woes

The Nasdaq Composite Index took a hit on Monday, falling 0.61% as memory chip stocks plummeted in response to reports about China and the AI computing industry.

Micron Technology led the decline, dropping 6% after a researcher spoke at the Hot Chips 2026 conference, noting that the speed of AI computing is outpacing underlying memory bandwidth. This has created an unsolved bottleneck for the entire industry, including Micron. The company's shares fell despite a possible new Chinese competitor and reports about the Trump administration potentially allowing Apple to buy memory chips from Chinese suppliers as a goodwill gesture.

Nvidia also suffered losses ahead of its Wednesday earnings release, falling 2.1% as investors treat the report as a key test of AI sentiment. The buyers of AI hardware fared better than the makers, with Alphabet rising 1.7%, and other 'Magnificent 7' components up by less than a percent.
