New ConocoPhillips CEO Faces High Stakes in Alaska Oil Project
ConocoPhillips has announced that Andy O'Brien will succeed CEO Ryan Lance on September 1, bringing an end to Lance's 14-year tenure. O'Brien, currently chief financial officer and a 30-year company veteran, will inherit the task of completing the expensive Willow oil project in Alaska, which is crucial to reaching the company's goal of adding $7 billion in free cash flow by 2029.
The Willow project is expected to produce 600 million barrels over its lifetime from the remote Alaska North Slope and accounts for nearly 75% of ConocoPhillips' free cash flow growth plan. However, the project has already increased in cost to up to $9 billion due to rising inflation and supply chain costs.
Lance's departure has raised concerns among analysts that O'Brien may struggle to meet investor expectations, given the high stakes surrounding the Willow project. ConocoPhillips' stock has underperformed its peers ExxonMobil and Chevron in recent years, and investors are waiting for results before buying the stock.
