New Mexico Democrats Urge Apple and Google to Resist Trump's Name Change

A group of Democratic lawmakers in New Mexico has asked Apple and Google to keep the state's name as 'New Mexico' on their map platforms. The move comes after President Trump shared an image of a map with 'Mexico' crossed out and replaced by 'America' on his social media platform, Truth Social.

The lawmakers, including Sens. Ben Ray Luján and Martin Heinrich and Reps. Melanie Stansbury, Teresa Leger Fernández, and Gabe Vasquez, argued that the President does not have the power to unilaterally rename a state, and that changing New Mexico's name would require a constitutional process.

The lawmakers pointed out that both Apple Maps and Google Maps recently changed the name of Lake Ontario to 'Lake America' after Trump signed an executive order to rename the body of water. They also noted that the map platforms changed the name of the Gulf of Mexico for American users to the 'Gulf of America' last year.

The lawmakers asked Apple CEO John Ternus and Google CEO Sundar Pichai to publicly commit to keeping New Mexico's name intact on their maps, citing the history of the state's name and its significance to its residents.
