New Mexico Leaders Slam Trump's Map Renaming Spree, Urge Apple and Google to Resist

New Mexico's congressional delegation has urged Apple and Google to reject President Donald Trump's suggestion to rename their state on mapping apps.

The five Democratic lawmakers, including Senators Ben Ray Luján and Martin Heinrich, sent letters to the executives of both tech companies, asking them to commit to keeping New Mexico identified as such on their maps.

In a statement, the lawmakers said that Trump's suggestion is 'unacceptable' and has no legal authority. They pointed out that the state's name is rooted in its history and Constitution.

The move comes after Trump posted several social media posts labeling New Mexico as 'New America', prompting concerns that the tech companies may cave to pressure from the White House.

Google and Apple have updated their maps to reflect changes requested by Trump, including renaming Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' and the Gulf of Mexico as the 'Gulf of America'. However, the New Mexico lawmakers are urging the companies not to follow suit in this case.
