Newsom Signs Executive Order to Rein In AI Companies
California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed an executive order to address concerns about artificial intelligence (AI). The move aims to strengthen AI safety and security laws in the state, which is home to many leading tech companies. This includes NVDA, AAPL, and GOOGL.
The governor's order calls for a group of experts to create a guide for strengthening AI oversight within two months. Enhanced laws may require independent third parties to write safety plans for frontier AI companies or mandate the development of a 'kill switch' to shut down models in emergency situations.
Newsom stated that the federal government has failed to provide meaningful AI oversight, and he believes California should take action now rather than waiting for Congress. The governor's term ends on January 4 next year, but he is considering a presidential campaign.
