Nike and Google Partner for AI Shopping Ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026
Nike has announced a new AI-powered shopping integration with Google's Gemini platform, just weeks before the FIFA World Cup 2026. The collaboration allows U.S. consumers to discover and purchase Nike products directly within the Gemini app and AI Mode in Search. This move comes as Nike seeks to boost growth after a challenging year for the stock.
The feature, set to launch in early June, leverages Google's Universal Commerce Protocol-powered multi-item checkout. This enables a seamless shopping experience, allowing users to complete purchases without switching between screens. Nike aims to capitalize on the surge in demand for football gear and fan merchandise ahead of the World Cup, which begins on June 11.
Shannon Glass, VP of Nike Direct, highlighted the timing of the rollout, stating, 'There’s no better time than the world’s biggest global football moment for us to show up with innovation that meets athletes when they’re inspired and when sport is at its peak.' The initiative has sparked bullish sentiment among retail traders, with Stocktwits data showing high message volume and positive momentum.
Despite the optimistic outlook, Nike has faced recent challenges, including a second round of layoffs in April that cut about 1,400 jobs. Earlier this year, the company eliminated 775 roles in January. Since the start of the year, Nike’s shares have dropped by around 30%. Pre-market trading on Wednesday saw Nike's stock rise nearly 0.3% following the announcement.
