NIKE Balances Cost Cuts with Growth Investments for Long-Term Strategy
NIKE, Inc. (NKE) is balancing cost-cutting measures with strategic investments to sustain long-term growth. The company's new Pace program aims to generate $2.5 billion in savings by fiscal 2031 through organizational streamlining, supply chain modernization, and improved productivity. These efforts are expected to incur about $1 billion in pre-tax charges, along with $300 million in severance costs in fiscal 2026.
While reducing costs, NIKE is maintaining its focus on growth initiatives. In the first quarter of fiscal 2027, selling and administrative expenses decreased by 3% year over year, but demand-creation spending rose by 5%, particularly around major sporting events. This approach allows NIKE to allocate resources more effectively, enhancing consumer engagement and brand strength.
The company faces near-term challenges, including an expected high single-digit revenue decline in fiscal 2027. NIKE is adjusting its portfolio, particularly in NIKE Sportswear, the Jordan Brand, and Greater China, to address excess supply and promote healthier market conditions. The goal is to support stronger full-price sales and long-term sustainability.
Analysts note that NIKE's strategy is sound but depends on successful execution. The company must reduce structural costs without compromising innovation and marketing capabilities. Shares of NIKE have dropped 21.6% in the past six months, outpacing the industry's decline of 16.9%. The stock trades at a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 20.09X, higher than the industry average of 17.31X.
