Nike Earnings Call: Performance Strength but Near-Term Financial Pressure

Nike Inc.'s first-quarter earnings call highlighted both operational progress and near-term financial pressure. Revenue declined 4% to $11.2 billion, with a 5% drop on a currency-neutral basis, while earnings per share dipped 2% year over year to $0.48.

The Performance portfolio remains the bright spot, growing high single digits in Q1 and building toward a $16 billion business by fiscal 2026. This growth was broad-based across Running, Global Football, Training, Basketball, Tennis, and Golf, signaling that Nike's competitive position in core sports remains solid despite macro and category headwinds.

Nike also noted significant progress in its Pace program, aimed at improving speed to market and sharpening operational focus. The initiative seeks to streamline decision-making, evolve the supply chain, move resources closer to key countries and consumers, and ultimately deliver about $2.5 billion in savings, with the largest benefits expected at the end of the decade.

However, Sportswear revenue declined in the low double digits due to a planned reduction in Dunk revenue, which weighed materially on results and created a $200 million headwind in Sportswear. The lifestyle market lacks energy, and consumers remain cautious, forcing Nike to bring more creativity to Sportswear and restructure assortments around distinct consumer needs and style preferences.

The company aims to reignite demand by leaning into local activations and partnerships to deepen consumer engagement, citing a recent Austin event around the Texas-Ohio State football game. The activation brought together Running, Training, Football, and Sportswear, featured Texas-specific fleece collections, and was supported by 13 new NIL athlete partnerships spanning eight sports.
