Nike's Dow Jones Status at Risk Amid Market Value Decline
Nike's recent removal from the S&P 100 has raised concerns that it may also be dropped from the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The sportswear maker has been a part of the index since 2013, but its market value has fallen by approximately 80% over the past five years.
According to analysts, Nike's struggles include weaker demand, slowing sales, and a lack of innovative products, making it an easy target for removal from the Dow Jones. The company currently accounts for only 0.4% of the index, which is the lowest weighting among all 30 components.
In an analysis of the Dow Jones's recent component changes, Josh Bischoff, partner and head of trading at TimesSquare Capital Management, noted that 'Nike is probably a candidate for removal.' Shay Bulur, chief market strategist at Futurum Equities, also expressed concern, stating that the likelihood of Nike being removed over the next year is significantly higher.
