Northampton Weighs Rules for AI Data Centers Amid Concerns Over Environmental Impacts
The Northampton City Council is considering forming a committee to study the potential impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers in their community. The move comes amid concerns that an AI data center might be built on the site of a soon-to-be-closed Coca-Cola plant, which is set to close by the end of the year.
Ward 3 City Councilor Laurie Loisel brought up the idea of creating a committee to study the issue and draft a municipal policy on data centers. She mentioned that other communities in the area are also considering similar measures, with Easthampton and Greenfield weighing temporary moratoriums on data centers.
Some councilors expressed concerns about the potential impacts of AI data centers on Northampton's environment and economy. Council Vice President Deborah Klemer warned that such centers can cause harm to local communities, using up resources and polluting the area, while providing few benefits in terms of jobs.
