Northeastern University Launches AI Makerspace with Microsoft Partnership
Northeastern University has opened an AI makerspace in partnership with Microsoft, aiming to help students, faculty, and staff learn how to use artificial intelligence efficiently. The space is located on the first floor of Snell Library and offers workshops and guidance from makerspace staff.
The university has positioned itself as a leader in AI education, launching an AI major this year to replace its data science major. Northeastern also offers 24 AI combined major offerings, responding to increased demand for AI skills from students, parents, and employers.
Microsoft representatives said the makerspace is designed to provide hands-on experience with AI, allowing users to learn by doing. The space's grand opening event featured an artwork gallery and a curated escape room that utilized AI.
Northeastern students expressed interest in using AI productively for learning and business but also emphasized the need to regulate it. One student noted that people using AI 'need to be skeptical ... because you don't want to lose your own thinking.'
