Nscale IPO Faces Scrutiny Amid Heavy Dependence on Microsoft and Anthropic
Nscale's impending IPO is set to be a significant test for investors in the AI sector.
The company, which operates data centers in Norway, Portugal, Texas, and West Virginia, has signed contracts worth over $103 billion with major customers like Microsoft and Anthropic.
However, 85% of this total comes from just two deals - a $43.8 billion contract with Microsoft to supply computing capacity through 2033 and a $44.6 billion agreement with Anthropic.
The performance of the Anthropic contract depends on Nscale securing necessary financing, and the laboratory has the right to withdraw or terminate the agreement if the company fails to meet interim requirements.
Nscale's customer concentration is not unique to the company, as research by credit hedge fund Sona Asset Management shows that many providers of AI computing resources also rely heavily on a few major customers.
According to Sona Asset Management, this interdependence is not inherently negative, but problems at or changes in strategy by one major player could quickly affect the entire sector.
