NTSB Report: Air Traffic Controller Failed to Warn Pilots of Strong Tail Winds
A preliminary report from the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) found that an air traffic controller failed to warn the pilots of an Amazon cargo plane about potential strong tail winds as they landed in Miami, contributing to a fatal crash.
The plane, operated by 21 Air and carrying packages for Amazon, careened off the runway at Miami International Airport on September 6, killing five people. The investigation is ongoing and could take over a year to complete.
Experts said that tail winds can make landing a plane harder, requiring more concentration from the pilots. The air traffic controller's failure to share wind conditions was 'a significant omission,' but would not have caused the crash on its own.
