Nuclear Power Plant Shutdown Hits Romania Amid Boeing 737 Max Crash Lawsuit Settlement

Romania has been forced to shut down its only nuclear power plant due to low water levels in the Danube River, which have also reduced hydropower output.

The second reactor at the Cernavodă nuclear power plant was halted after prolonged hot weather pushed the river's levels to critically low levels. The shutdown is expected to last at least 10 days and will increase pressure on Romania's power system, with the country relying more on gas, coal, renewable energy, and electricity imports.

In other news, a US jury has awarded $29 million to the family of Michael Ryan, an Irish UN employee who was killed in the 2019 Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 Max crash. Ryan's widow, Naoise Connolly Ryan, brought the case against Boeing, which expressed sympathy for the families affected by the crash.
