Nvidia, AMD GPU Prices Surge Amid Global Memory Shortage
The European GPU market has seen significant price increases in recent months, with Nvidia's average graphics card prices surging by 41.3% and AMD's rising by 28.3% between June and September of this year.
A tracker measuring average street prices across retailers in the eurozone reported that Nvidia's GeForce RTX 50-series cards rose from approximately €783 to around €1,107 over the three-month period, while AMD's Radeon RX 9000-series cards increased from about €644 to €826. The price hikes are attributed to a memory shortage rather than any changes in chip design or manufacturing costs.
Nvidia's flagship GeForce RTX 5090 carries 32GB of GDDR7 memory, which is more exposed to the same fabs prioritizing high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for AI accelerators. This higher memory capacity per card contributes to the larger price gap between Nvidia and AMD.
