Nvidia Backed Politician Reports Capital Gains from Data Center Stock
Derek Merrin, the Republican candidate for Ohio's 9th Congressional District seat, has reported capital gains of at least $1,200 from his investments in Nvidia stock. This disclosure comes as data centers have become a contentious issue in politics, with 7 out of 10 Americans polled by Gallup opposing their construction in their area.
A September poll from Bowling Green State University found that 75% of Ohioans oppose the construction of data centers in their communities, citing environmental and energy concerns. Nvidia is set to provide up to $105 billion in financing for a new AI data center campus in Pike County, Ohio.
Merrin's financial disclosure report shows he made capital gains between $1,001 and $2,500 from 'Nvida' stock options, likely a typo, and between $201 and $1,000 on Nvidia Corporation common stock. As a member of the Ohio House of Representatives, Merrin voted for tax breaks for data centers in 2017.
