Nvidia-Backed Reflection AI Preps Open-Weight Model for October Launch
Reflection AI, backed by Nvidia, is set to release its first open-weight model in October 2026. According to Axios, this model will initially trail top US frontier models but be competitive with Chinese open-weight systems and capable of supporting companies' proprietary AI on top of it.
Other Western open-weight models are also expected to launch in the same month, sources claim. The company's longer-term goal is an 'AI factory' product that allows institutions to combine their own data and Reflection's models with custom compute for a cheaper AI system.
Hedge funds and trading firms have expressed interest in this concept, which is being tested through a partnership with Shinsegae in South Korea. Nvidia has strongly supported the development of an open system, aligning with its CEO Jensen Huang's vision of pairing hardware with open models to keep ownership of data with enterprises.
CEO Misha Laskin notes that building a top AI model takes time, comparable to developing a 'big rocket ship'. This move could provide Western banks and government users with an affordable alternative to Anthropic, OpenAI, and Google's offerings.
