Nvidia Bets Big on MediaTek Partnership
Nvidia has poured $3.5 billion into Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek as part of a deal that deepens their partnership.
The investment involves Nvidia buying bonds convertible into MediaTek shares, which will tie MediaTek into an Nvidia technology suite that helps components communicate more seamlessly in data centres.
Nvidia's goal is to keep the future of artificial intelligence built around its hardware and standards. This deal follows a similar agreement with Amazon, where the tech giant pledged to deploy an additional 2 million Nvidia components using Nvidia's connection technology with its own in-house chips.
Nvidia forecasts a 70% jump in sales next year, despite its biggest customers, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft, building their own in-house chips. The company is betting it can stay at the centre of the AI hardware chain by wiring rivals' silicon into its own standards.
