Nvidia Blasts Past Expectations, Chip Sector Remains Flat
Nvidia's earnings report was a blockbuster, exceeding expectations in several areas. The company reported revenue of $8.07 billion and net income of $3.58 billion for its fiscal second quarter ended July 31.
The results were driven by strong demand for the company's graphics processing units (GPUs) used in gaming and artificial intelligence applications. However, despite Nvidia's impressive performance, the broader chip sector did not experience a breakout in response to the news.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang attributed the strong quarter to 'pent-up demand' from customers who had been waiting for the company's new products, including the GeForce RTX 3080 graphics card. The company also reported that its datacenter business saw significant growth, with revenue increasing by 88% year-over-year.
